There will be three on track sessions, one in the morning and two in the afternoon, held under a pace car at moderate speed to eliminate the need for special safety clothing or helmets. What’s more you can even take passengers, so if your car has enough space, the whole family can experience a few laps of this great circuit. We have to emphasise though that this event is in no way a track day.
Entry to the event is free if you just wish to display your vehicle; it is also free to spectators, however there is a small charge of just £20.00 per car, payable in advance, to take part in parade laps. This fee covers all three on-track sessions, which is a bargain for such a unique experience at a fantastic venue.
On top of the static display of vehicles and track action taking place there will also be the opportunity to walk or cycle around the circuit during the lunch break. Hungry or thirsty? The on-site Bistro restaurant facility will be open all day for snacks, drinks and cooked meals.
Bristol Motor Club is proud to offer this event in a friendly, safe and informal way, for Classic and Performance car enthusiasts of all ages.
Social
Competitive
Set in the beautiful Devon countryside not far from Honiton, the Wiscombe Five-Clubs Hillclimb has been running annually since 1976. It’s a joint affair between Bristol and Plymouth, Taunton and Burnham-on-Sea Motor Clubs. The Five-Clubs has been a qualifying round of the ASWMC Championship every year since it started, and for 19 years from 1979 it was also a round of the British Hillclimb Championship, and its late-in-season date means that there are often some important scores to be settled.
The hill itself is 1000 yards in length, with an average gradient of 1-in-13.6. Single-seaters can achieve speeds approaching 130mph on the undulating, tree-lined top straight – a sight unmatched in the south-west. For competitors it represents a challenge and a thrill unlike any other event we organise, whilst for marshals it provides a rare chance to get close to some nail-biting action. With facilities for camping, caravans and motorhomes on site, and a selection of affordable guest houses in the area, Wiscombe offers the prospect of a late-season motorsport weekend for family and friends alike.
The Best Performance by a Bristol MC member is awarded The Joe Fry Trophy, the Rex Hays model of the Freikaiserwagen.
Competitive
This is by far the cheapest way into motorsport. This is a free process and just collects mandatory details.
Register here
Our longest Sprint. 1¾ laps of Castle Combe in this season opener. This popular event fills quickly!
This, the first multi-lap sprint to run at Castle Combe, was the brainchild of Paul Parker, with the help of Mark Chater, drawing on the experience of running the similar format at Llandow. For the first running of the event in 2008, it was organised jointly with Bristol Pegasus Motor Club.
1¾ laps of the Castle Combe circuit equates to a competitive run of 3.3 miles; it was then, and probably still is, the longest sprint course in the country. It has been a qualifying round of the British Sprint Championship from the start, and thus attracts the biggest, fastest, most spectacular sprinters in the UK!
Its March date means that for many it is the first sprint of the season, and reliability issues have occasionally led to some running delays, which haven’t been helped by the unpredictable nature of the weather. However, over the years the organising team have refined the operation to surmount most of the difficulties, or at least those over which they have some control!
The principal trophies presented for this event are The Hastings Trophy for Fastest Time of the Day, and The Castle Combe Plate for the Best Performance by a Bristol MC member.
Results of the last Great Western Sprint
All our sprints require organising and marshalling, so even if you don’t compete there are outlets for a wide range of other skills and interests.
Competitive
Competitive
Like many classic sporting events, the annual Allen Classic Trial takes its name from a trophy; this one was presented to the club in 1938 by the Armstrong Siddeley agent of that name at the top of Park Street in Bristol, in the premises that are now occupied by Pizza Express.
Don’t be misled by the name – Classic Trials are for all sorts of cars (and motorbikes in some events). What is “classic” about classic trials is the format, which has its roots back in the 1930s. To put it simply, in a trial you have to drive your car up a number of narrow, steep, muddy slopes and try to avoid getting stuck. There are penalties if you fail, and the winner is the competitor with the lowest score at the end of the day. There is a route of 70-100 miles on the public highway to get from one slope, or ‘section’, to the next, and any timing is used to keep the whole event on some sort of schedule rather than as a way of penalising competitors. Many of the observed sections, on which one’s performance is determined, are the same ones that were used 80-odd years ago, and they are still as challenging as they were then.
You’ll find much more about Classic Trials on the informative Association of Classic Trials Clubs website, including how to get started in the sport.
First run in its current form in 1946, The Allen continues to attract a full entry for the 75-mile drive around the Mendip countryside every November, taking in such classic sections as Big Uplands, John Walker, Toghill, Travers and Burledge. It takes its place alongside other established Classic Reliability Trials in the annual calendar, and has twice won the national Trial of the Year award.
It is a tour de force for the organising team who each year give weeks of their time planning the route, preparing the sections, conducting an enormous PR exercise, and recruiting and delivering equipment to the 100-plus marshals, without whom the event simply would not happen.
These days the Allen starts and finishes at The Bull at Hinton, roughly 5-minutes south of the M4 junction-18, between Bristol and Bath. Here’s a video record of the first-time experience of two club members in 2013.
Apart from the eponymous trophy for the winner, the Best Performance by a Bristol MC member is rewarded by the Gilbert Best Memorial Trophy, named in honour of a staunch club member and successful triallist in the 1940s and 50s.
Competitive
